Gettysburg is a charming, nostalgic place to visit any time of year, but there’s just something magical about the atmosphere of this historic borough at Christmastime. That’s when all those fan-favorite seasonal festivities, along with the annually celebrated A Gettysburg Christmas Festival, roll into town. It truly creates an ambiance straight from a Dickens novel.
Always held the first weekend in December, A Gettysburg Christmas Festival is the undeniable anchoring holiday highlight to visit each year. But there are also plenty of other ongoing seasonal delights to enjoy locally. For instance, there’s the official Tree Lighting Ceremony in Lincoln Square, signaling the start of the Christmas season and marking the arrival of Santa Claus to town. This cherished tradition occurs on the Friday evening after Thanksgiving each year and is sponsored by GARMA (the Gettysburg Area Retail Merchants Association). Additionally, many beloved town-wide attractions undergo a nostalgic Christmas-themed transformation. Visits to the Eisenhower National Historic Site, the Shriver House Museum, and the Majestic Theater are even more enchanting during the holidays.
While seasonal happenings take place before, during, and after the official A Gettysburg Christmas Festival weekend, attending the event is the best way to experience a full array of attractions, activities, and exclusive specials not available at other times.
Every year, the festival officially begins on that first Friday evening, running from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. However, many activities and offerings kick off earlier in the day. These include numerous holiday markets at various venues across town, open house tours, hands-on crafting sessions, discounted sales and deals from local businesses, and the release of special food and drink items to commemorate this all-out hometown tradition. Friday is also when the one and only Civil War Santa begins his rounds!
The festive fun of A Gettysburg Christmas Festival continues all weekend long. Some events occur at specific times on Saturday and/or Sunday, such as “Breakfast with Santa,” special presentations by participating merchants, guest appearances, or exclusive talks and demonstrations.
Other festival offerings run throughout the three-day event. Highlights include carriage rides, moon bounces, an amusing human foosball setup (open to all participants), visits with real-life reindeer, the Adams County Arts Council’s Gingerbread Celebration and Holiday Market, scavenger hunts, entertainment acts around every corner, and a wide variety of delicious food. Whether served by beloved local establishments or special food trucks, the culinary options won’t disappoint. Roasted chestnuts, anyone? You’ll find them being handed out in front of the Shriver House Museum!
Other engaging opportunities throughout the weekend include book signings by various authors, character appearances by historical figures (including Charles Dickens), living history demonstrations, and much more. This is also the time to catch screenings of A Gettysburg Christmas, the movie, at the Majestic Theater. On that note, the Majestic also hosts other holiday presentations, including the long-standing tradition of Totem Pole Playhouse’s live stage production of A Christmas Carol.
If you love the quaint, small-town, old-fashioned charm that Gettysburg exudes year-round, then A Gettysburg Christmas Festival is a must-see holiday event.
