The Washington, D.C. cherry blossoms are an iconic and breathtaking sight that captivates visitors and locals alike every spring. These delicate pink and white blossoms adorn the branches of thousands of cherry trees, creating a stunning contrast against the backdrop of the city’s monuments and landmarks.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival commemorates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the city of Washington, D.C., and celebrates the enduring friendship between the people of the United States and Japan.
The Tidal Basin, surrounded by the Jefferson Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, and the Washington Monument, is one of the prime locations to witness this ephemeral spectacle.
More than 1.5 million people attend the four-week Festival, which features a wide range of innovative programs that highlights traditional and modern art and culture, the beauty of the outdoors, and a sense of community. Most events are public and free of charge.
“Residents and visitors are invited to celebrate all that Washington, DC has to offer — from exciting events to convenient hotels, delectable Cherry Picks restaurants to vibrant Art in Bloom installations, and a jaw-dropping City in Bloom to joyful Petal Porches.”
