Spanning 1,100 scenic acres, the grounds comprise gardens, fields, woodland hiking trails, living history sites, and plenty of onsite activities catering to all ages and special interests. The resident nature center, which opened back in 1983, has successfully upheld its ongoing mission “to provide engaging educational and recreational opportunities in nature that will instill a sense of wonder, promote environmental stewardship, and create a lasting legacy of positive choices in [our own] backyards, Maryland, and the Chesapeake Bay.” This is primarily done through the wealth of in-house exhibits and attractions they present, some of which include live animals, fossils, historic tools and artifacts on display, reading materials, activity rooms, and more.
