Stop by the Woodshed, recently relocated to a new space next to Mast General Store, where you’ll discover handcrafted treasures from over 200 Appalachian artisans. Nearly two dozen call the Roanoke area home, and their work tells the story of the region’s creative spirit. For something truly unique, duck into Chocolatepaper, a delightful shop specializing in niche and local gifts that you simply won’t find anywhere else. In fact, they have scouted the country to curate some of the best handcrafted chocolates you will ever taste.

Each night of Dickens brings its own special magic. December 5^th features the City of Roanoke Christmas Tree Lighting, with live performances filling the plaza behind the Market Building with song. December 12^th showcases the Christmas Parade, which winds its way through downtown starting at 6:30 pm. And December 19^th belongs to our four-legged friends with the Roanoke Valley SPCA Pet Costume Contest, where categories like “Best Holiday Theme” and “Funniest Costume” promise Instagram-worthy moments.

Throughout the celebration, families can enjoy the Kids Zone with inflatables and activities, while Snowzilla Jr.—a massive 35-foot-tall, 90-foot-long winter slide—offers thrills for adventurous spirits. Cox S’mores Station provides free kits for toasting marshmallows over fire pits (while supplies last), and carriage rides clip-clop through the streets on the first and third nights for just $5 per person.

8 Ways to Enjoy All The Seasons in Frederick County MD

Frederick County, Maryland, is home to a vast and versatile range of awesome endeavors. From acclaimed attractions to be enjoyed year-round, to select seasonal offerings that draw in locals and visitors alike, the options are seemingly endless.

Regarding the previously mentioned seasonal offerings, you have an abundance of beloved festivals, fairs, races, and other events to take in throughout the county, occurring at various times throughout the year. Here are eight great can’t-miss examples of the most hopping happenings to check out in Frederick County, Maryland.

Sailing Through the Winter Solstice

Since 2016, the scene at Carroll Creek Park has been dazzling residents and drawing in visitors to Downtown Frederick even in the coldest of months. That’s because the aptly named Sailing Through the Winter Solstice is a heart-warming, wowing spectacle to behold—a true treat to take the edge off the bitter cold and a viable reason for bracing frigid conditions and getting outdoors.

Made possible by the nonprofit organization Color On The Creek, Sailing Through the Winter Solstice features a versatile themed display of lighted, decorated sailboats, set up along Carroll Creek. The boats can be viewed any time, day or night, November through March, although coming at night when all are illuminated is especially enthralling and nothing less than magical, to say the least.

In addition to serving as a delightful diversion to the chilly weather, Sailing Through the Winter Solstice operates as a fundraiser for nonprofit organizations throughout Frederick County. Fire in Ice

In addition to the aforementioned, folks in Frederick have another cold-weather endeavor to celebrate. It’s the annually presented Fire In Ice festival. Made possible by the Downtown Frederick Partnership, it’s been a steady mainstay tradition for many years now, serving to keep the spirits of locals and visitors alike warm and cheerful. It rightfully comes as a most befitting, mood-boosting midwinter endeavor, during that lean season right after the holidays when you feel like springtime is still too far off!

The highlight of the event is, of course, the hundreds of ice sculptures gracing the Downtown Frederick area. But there’s plenty to be said about the featured entertainment as well, including live ice carving demos, and frozen featured activities like playing ice golf or checking out an ice bar!

The fire component in the festival’s name can be summed up by the presentations of professional pyrotechnic performers. Their goal is to delight and amaze onlookers with breathtaking, masterful feats involving fire and flame.

Maple Syrup Festival

Arguably the grandest of all maple sugaring events throughout the state, the annually presented Maple Syrup Festival at Cunningham Falls State Park in Thurmont is a tradition that has been running strong and constant for well over five decades. Always held two consecutive weekends in March, the festival primarily strives to highlight the history behind maple syrup making in Maryland.

Attending guests have an array of activities and exciting endeavors to explore throughout the festival’s run. Such offerings include witnessing the onsite maple syrup making process in action, taking hayrides through the resident maple grove, participating in a “flipped” out pancake race (where you try to flip a pancake while running ahead of other contestants), and so much more.

Because breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and maple syrup is such an essential part of so many breakfasts, you can count on a featured feast of locally made breakfast items to be available for purchase. Some are more traditional, while others take creative liberties as unique, one-of-a-kind “maple-syrupy” concoctions you can’t pass up.

The Maple Syrup Festival is hosted by the Friends of Cunningham Falls State Park and Gambrill State Park at the William Houck Area of Cunningham Falls State Park. Maryland Iron Festival

Hosted annually by none other than the Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, this free-for-all two-day festival draws in visitors from all over Maryland and surrounding states throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. It serves the joint purpose of honoring Frederick County’s historic role in iron production, specifically, as well as the area’s overall history and heritage.

As a springtime festival, it packs a plethora of events to keep crowds buzzing all weekend long. Do you like live music and entertainment? Well, they certainly have a versatile line of musicians to keep the beat at any event. Then there are all those bountiful vendors to boot, all featured via the onsite Makers Market. Other delightful offerings to check out include guided garden and trail tours around the historic furnace site, plein air art shows, kid-friendly activities, delectable food and beverage offerings, talks by expert historians and archeologists, and arguably their most popular featured event—onsite blacksmithing demonstrations featuring live iron pouring!

The next installment of the Maryland Iron Festival will take place on May 16 and 17, 2026. Again, it will be held on location at the Historic Catoctin Furnace at 12610 Catoctin Furnace Road, Thurmont, Maryland 21788. Learn more on the website at www.catoctinfurnace.org.

In The Streets

This is a fun, free-to-attend, ongoing annual festival celebration that has been going strong for over 40 years and remains as popular as ever! A tradition started back in 1983, the idea behind In the Streets came about following a major renovation to the town, which had forced the closure of Market Street for several months. The festival was then-Mayor Ron Young’s answer to getting folks to come back out and enjoy a major street party in the aftermath of all the construction. Serving to encourage and uplift new and existing commerce alike, it also gave sir-crazy folks a reason to come out and party!

In its first year, In the Streets brought in 10,000 attendees. Now, more than four decades later, those numbers exceed 75,000! The event’s popularity remains constant, providing a way for all ages and interests to share in family-friendly fun and community camaraderie. It also keeps the foundational objective of allowing businesses and nonprofits throughout Frederick County to set up service booths and offerings of many kinds.

Next year’s In the Streets will take place on September 12, 2026, on Market Street, beginning at 9 a.m.

The Great Frederick Fair

There are many nice fairs to attend throughout Maryland, but you couldn’t assign a better adjective than “great” to describe this annual folly, which is why it’s part of the official title. Held every September, the Great Frederick Fair boasts a fantastically wonderful series of activities, events, and ovation-worthy options to charm any visitor of any age and interest.

The timeless testament to its impressive tenure, which goes back more than 160 years, is all the proof you need regarding the Great Frederick Fair’s telling greatness. Here you can enjoy an array of multifaceted experiences, from agricultural and 4-H pursuits to demos, competitions, and more. Foodies won’t be disappointed by the fine selections of profuse provisions to savor, and kids of all ages (including those of the 18+ distinction) will have a blast with authentic carnival rides, games, and other good old American classics. And don’t forget about the live entertainment and other special ticketed happenings throughout the fair’s multi-week run.

Catoctin Colorfest

While witnessing autumn’s natural artistry come to life is a treat in and of itself, there’s something especially alluring about the ambiance throughout Thurmont’s beautiful, bucolic canvas of changing colors. That’s one of the reasons why Catoctin Colorfest has been held here every second full weekend in October since 1963.

While the origins of the event may have started humbly, Catoctin Colorfest has emerged to become one of the largest outdoor craft shows on the East Coast. Over 350 vendors, locally based and venturing from faraway regions, comprise a vast and versatile lineup of participants each year. And attending crowds can reach as many as 110,000 attendees!

The profuse offerings here range from art, jewelry, home goods, knick-knacks, novelty essentials, and just about everything else you can imagine (or never even imagined in your wildest dreams)! Food and onsite entertainment also mark the lively scene in what can arguably be considered one of the county’s grandest pre-holiday seasonal events of the year.

Next year’s Catoctin Colorfest will take place on October 10 and 11. Attending is free, although a parking fee does apply. Shuttles will take you to the exact location of all active happenings. National Clustered Spires High Wheel Race

Did you know that Frederick County, Maryland, is the only place where you can experience America’s only high-wheel bicycle race? Presented every July in historic Downtown Frederick, it’s the one and only National Clustered Spires High Wheel Race. For this event, riders hailing from all over the country come out to participate in the quarter-mile race, which begins at North Market Street (in front of Brewer’s Alley). The major draw, however, is admittedly the racers’ various modes of ride—they are none other than authentic (or masterfully replicated) 19th-century penny farthings, distinguishable by their large front wheels and smaller rear ones. While the race is a fun and thrilling delight for participants, it is just as much of a treat for the onlooking spectators crowding around to view the event live.

Exploring Naval History on the ‘Big J’

While crossing the Ben Franklin Bridge on our way to Cape May, New Jersey, I peered down and was greeted with the sight of the massive battleship USS New Jersey berthed on the Camden side of the Delaware River. Drawing my wife Jenn’s attention to the ship, she enthusiastically exclaimed, “Want to go?” Within minutes we were at the dock, preparing to board the sprawling warship.

The USS New Jersey, nicknamed the “Big J,” was constructed at the nearby Philadelphia Navy Yard. As a matter of local pride, four additional inches were added to her overall length, making her the largest US Navy battleship ever built.

Walking up the gangplank to the main deck, we entered turret #2 and examined the innerworkings of the three massive 16-inch guns, each capable of firing a 2,700 pound armor piercing shell approximately 23 miles.

Exiting the turret, we made our way towards the bow. A 50-caliber machine gun mounted along the rail drew our attention and I couldn’t help myself from gripping the handles and peering through the sights. Much to my chagrin, depressing the trigger caused the display to emit the sound of machine gun fire, making me jump back in surprise.

Continuing forward, we were amazed by the massive links of the anchor chains. Weighing 128-pounds each, the links connect to the gigantic 30,000-pound anchors that once held the ship in place. Reaching the bow, we turned around to view the impressive superstructure and the enormous guns of turret #1 and #2.

Crawling through a small hatch in the deck, we clambered down a tight ladder and entered the enlisted crew’s quarters. Bunks were stacked three high from floor to ceiling, and we were invited to test them out. I finagled my way up into the middle bunk and was surprised by the overwhelming sense of claustrophobia I felt. At its peak, the “Big J” carried a compliment of 1,921 officers and seamen.

Gazing down a row of open hatches gave the impression that the ship went on forever and we were struck by how disorienting it felt. Luckily, there’s colored tape on the floor directing us where to go.

Moving along, we discovered one of the most interesting areas of the ship, a section where visiting veterans could autograph the wall stating their years of service, branch and/or area of deployment.

Scale models of the three USS New Jerseys

Next, a large room highlights the history of the three navy vessels named USS New Jersey. A display case holds scale models of the first battleship (BB-16), the “Big J,” battleship (BB-62), and the modern Virginia class attack submarine (SSN-796).

However, emphasis is placed on the “Big J” which was launched on December 7, 1942. Her primary function was the bombardment of Japanese positions prior to amphibious landings and providing an air screen for American aircraft carriers.

Following WWII, the “Big J” saw service in both Korea and Vietnam. She was modernized in the 1980s to carry Tomahawk cruise missiles and Harpoon anti-ship missiles and was last deployed during the Lebanese Civil War. She was decommissioned for the final time in 1991 and was donated to the Home Port Alliance in 2001 for use as a museum ship.

The “Big J” received 19 battle stars for her service and is the most decorated battleship in the history of the US Navy.

One of the things that impressed us the most was that the “Big J” was basically a floating city, providing everything the crew would need including a mess hall, ship store, tv studio, metal shop, post office, barbershop, and medical facilities. It gave us a glimpse into what life was like for the sailors that served aboard the ship.

Making our way to the superstructure, we toured the captain’s quarters and the admiral’s quarters where William “Bull” Halsey, Jr. of WWII fame once directed fleet operations.

Moving farther aft, we were able to get a close-up view of the “Big J’s” modern armament including Tomahawk cruise missile launchers and Phalanx close-in weapon systems.

Returning to the main deck, we were able to closely examine an Oerlikon 20mm cannon and a Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to sit at the twin 40mm and rotate the cranks that adjusted the elevation and rotated the platform, wondering what it was like to defend the fleet from enemy air attack.

Departing the “Big J,” we reflected on how thrilling it was to explore one of the most powerful warships ever built and learn more about naval history.

A Cozy Getaway in Virginia’s Northern Neck Offers Guests Unforgettable Experiences

The Highly Hailed Highlights of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

There’s so much to see, do, and explore throughout the greater region of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Detours to nearby Charles Town and Martinsburg also come with an exciting array of extras, which can certainly be added to any extended outing here. In truth, however, making extra stops is entirely unnecessary, as you’ll find plenty of pleasant offerings right onsite of this National Historical Park directly.

Because everyone is an individual with unique, personal interests, activity preferences are sure to differ by group. Still, there are some quintessential, mutually agreed-upon must-dos that most would consider Harpers Ferry rites of passage. Here is a list of just some of those highly hailed highlights.

Start at the Beginning

**Harpers Ferry Visitor Center located on Shoreline Drive**

Whatever you choose to do on your outing to Harpers Ferry, you’ll want to head first to the Visitor Center on Shoreline Drive. Not only is it the place to gather great area guides, brochures, and all the most up-to-date information you need to know, but it’s also the place to purchase park passes, which are required for officially entering the limits of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

Guests are welcome to park their cars within the Visitor Center parking lot and take the shuttle bus (included with admission) down to the Lower Town district—the heart of most Harpers Ferry attractions. Shuttles run every 10 to 15 minutes daily during operational hours. Do note, however, that pets are not permitted on shuttles.

Suppose you are planning to bring along a four-legged friend, or you choose not to ride the shuttle for other reasons. In that case, alternate parking can be found at various other access points to the Harpers Ferry Lower Town district. Click here for a complete listing.

Explore Museums and Exhibits in Lower Town

Most would agree that exploring all the different museums and exhibits on display throughout the Lower Town district is an absolute must. There’s certainly no shortage of plentiful pickings to pursue, although be warned that not all attractions may be available at all times. Some closures may be necessary for refurbishments or updates, such as maintenance, repairs, etc. That’s why getting all the latest updates from the Visitor Center is always a best practice.

The onsite museums that Harpers Ferry is best known for include the John Brown Museum, Black Voices: African American History Museum, Industry Museum, and the Civil War Museum. There are also recreated living history exhibits worth looking into. These include the Storer College & the Niagara Movement Exhibit, A Place in Time, the Boarding House, a Dry Goods Store, Philip Frankel & Co./Ready-Made Clothing, White Hall Tavern, Harper House, the Confectionery, A. Burton: Fine Watch Repair/Burton Jewelry Store, and the Provost Marshal Office. Venture to the Top of Jefferson Rock

Arguably, the most scenic sight to behold in all of Harpers Ferry, Jefferson Rock can be found at its elevated location along the Appalachian Trail between the Lower Town district and Camp Hill section. It is one of the most-hiked hot spots in the park—a definite must-do, despite the steep and hilly terrain, which can pose a bit of a challenge to some. But once you stand out, overlooking all the unrivaled, pristine beauty encompassing you and those optimal views of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers below, you will know that it was all worth it!

Jefferson Rock gets its name from Thomas Jefferson, who famously stood here on October 25, 1783, and described it as being “perhaps one of the most stupendous scenes in nature.” He published his full description in his Notes on the State of Virginia, published in 1785.

Visitors today take note that you are not permitted to stand directly on top of Jefferson Rock or its supporting base. Standing next to it in the public access area is more than sufficient, though, I promise.

Explore St. Peter’s Church

While ascending along the way to Jefferson Rock from the Lower Town, you will pass by an old, historic stone chapel. This is St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church—another Harpers Ferry highlight worth exploring. The church and its foundational hillside site pack a storied past. While the original structure was damaged, the current building is still a vintage marvel, having been rebuilt in the 1890s.

The church is open to the public on weekends and holidays for tours and other events. Tourists and residents in the area can still attend Mass here every Sunday at 9:30 am, and docents dressed in old-fashioned attire lead tours and answer questions during the peak tourist season, which runs between May and November. Concerts and holiday events are held here as well, as part of the Olde Tyme Christmas in Harpers Ferry event, which takes place annually the first two weekends in December.

Look Upon Three States at Once

There is a spot in Harpers Ferry where you can stand and see three states (Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia) all at once. Known familiarly as “The Point,” it’s another must-see, must-do endeavor often sought out by visitors. Stand here and you can also see the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers as well.

Take a Hike

Harpers Ferry is a hiker’s haven with so many versatile offerings ranging in difficulty levels and types of terrain. You can explore more than 20 different designated hiking trails, from shorter pathways across Civil War battlefields to more rugged adventures that require a bit of climbing and fortitude.

On that note, it’s also worth mentioning that Harpers Ferry just happens to be the distinguishable midpoint of the famed Appalachian Trail. You can view all of the available hiking trails and the challenges that each one entails by clicking here.

Get in the Water

Because you have both the Shenandoah and the Potomac Rivers onsite, it should come as no surprise that Harpers Ferry is particularly preferable to those seeking multiple water-based activities. These range from fishing to tubing, rafting, kayaking, canoeing, and even paddleboarding. Various area suppliers will get you situated with what you need, depending on your intended endeavor.

Always be sure you check that the specific location of the body of water you plan to visit is suitable for your intended activity or recreation. Currents, deepness, and rockiness vary in different sections of both rivers.

Climb a Couple Cliffs

The dense, rocky, and versatile terrain comprising Harpers Ferry makes it an optional outing for climbing enthusiasts. The National Park Service has designated specific scaling walls, which are open during certain seasons. Availability is dependent on peregrine nesting times, weather conditions, and other factors. So, again, it is imperative to check in advance.

Indulge in Eats and Treats

While packing a picnic and enjoying one of several public gathering areas in the park can be pleasantly relaxing and low-key, you should note that Harpers Ferry is home to some delicious onsite dining options as well. There’s also Almost Heaven Pub and Grill, serving up all those casual classics you know and love. Craving craft beer, fresh hot pizza, and scenic views? Harpers Ferry Brewing has you covered! Vegan-friendly options can be found at Kelley Farm Kitchen, and White Horse Tavern provides premium, iconic foodie favorites.

Not looking for a meal, per se? There are plenty of lite-bite snack venues to consider as well. From ice cream to grab-and-go goodies, and even candy (including the famed True Treats Historic Candy), you have no shortage of prime provisions to tuck into on your visit to Harpers Ferry!

Wildly Wonderful Wildlife Encounters Close to the Coast

Wildlife encounters close to the coast are not as elusive as you may believe. Perhaps you already know about the numerous parks, nature centers, and even ranger/volunteer-led educational programs offered along the greater Delmarva shoreline. Visits to such places as Assateague Island and Indian River can especially appeal to those looking for an impromptu car trip away from the standard beach day. But for those who seek guaranteed creature encounters, you don’t have to work too hard at spotting out in nature, there’s an alternative—a traditional, organized zoo or aquarium excursion guaranteed to up the ante. But are there really any zoos and aquariums in a convenient range to the Mid-Atlantic beach location you’re currently at? The answer is a surprising “yes.” Here are six suggested Delmarva Coast options you have to check out.

Coastal Wilds

Located in Frankford, Delaware, Coastal Wilds provides the perfect answer for those looking to have unique one-on-one animal encounters. Formerly established as Barn Hill Preserve, the newly-branded Coastal Wilds is home to 35 diverse species among such animals as otters, sloths, kangaroos, wallabies, lynxes, camels, spider monkeys, capybaras, aardvarks, fennec foxes, Watusi cattle, owls, ravens, rheas, chinchillas, rabbits, hedgehogs, tenrecs, guinea pigs, alpacas, ducks, chickens, tortoises, lizards, armadillos, and snakes.

Because they are a privately owned operation, seasonal hours and dates for when they are open vary. Most programs and specials must be booked in advance, including fall and winter festival dates and breakfast/brunch engagements.

Brandywine Zoo

At just over 4.7 acres, Brandywine Zoo is perfect proof of that old saying about great things coming in small packages. Having opened back in 1905, this wild Wilmington-based destination features a fanciful menagerie of creatures. Some are common critters, while others are of a far more exotic nature.

As part of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, they even house highly endangered species on location here, offering visitors a one-of-a-kind chance to see animals you can’t find anywhere else, not even in nature in some cases.

The diversified lineup of resident animals here includes those from many different regions. This makes for many different exhibits and displays that cater to each one’s essential needs and comforts, as would be presented in the wild. Some hail from tropical regions, while others are from temperate areas in North and South America, Asia, and even parts of Africa. From goats to giant anteaters, bobcats to lemurs, binturongs to toucans, and so many others, you’ll definitely be in awe by taking this delightful little detour!

3 Palms Zoo

In contrast to Brandywine, 3 Palms Zoo is the state’s largest. Located in Townsend, it’s also the only zoo in Delaware boasting an Alligator Exhibit, Eastern Coyote, and Silver Foxes. With a primary focus on rescued and surrendered animals, the residents here largely comprise former pets, displaced exotics, and non-releasable wildlife.

A wide range of traditional barnyard animals make their permanent home here. These include sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas, geese, ducks, chickens, turkeys, pigs, rabbits, emus, and many others. Additionally, you’ll find skunks, raccoons, pelicans, owls, exotic birds, turtles, and the previously mentioned foxes, coyotes, and alligators.

The zoo offers guests the added incentive to take part in hands-on experiences, which vary by specific offering. Updates to events and what is being promoted at a given time are updated on the website regularly.

Salisbury Zoo

This admission-free zoological park based in Salisbury, Maryland, may very well be the East Coast’s best hidden gem for ultimate animal lovers. Yet it’s actually been around since the 1950s!

Boasting a wealth of attractive features, the impressive come-and-go-as-you-please venue offers endless opportunities on how to plan your day. You can go at your own pace, take the exhibits and attractions in any order, and enjoy an all-around relaxed, low-key experience without breaking your budget!

The permanent residents here include well over 100 diverse creatures of various species. They hail from North and South America, the vast wilds of Australia, and beyond. Their Andean Bear attraction is an especially unique offering. You can even view a live feed of the camera from your computer at home!

In addition to being a free zoo, most of the events and programs offered here are also free to participate in (except otherwise specified). It may be a smaller zoo, but its amenities are far grander than expected!

Hunt Club Farm

While not as widely renowned as some other notable venues in the area, this farm and educational center combo, based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, truly is a hidden marvel to be explored. Situated along a 35-acre farm, they offer a wide range of experiences that cater to visitors of all ages and interests.

Because they are open daily and year-round, you will find plentiful ongoing happenings any time you visit. These include seasonal festivals and special events, featured programs, and changing presentations and activities in addition to all the regular offerings. But take note, there really isn’t anything “regular” about regular offerings here. Everything goes way above and beyond the norm!

As for their noted petting zoo pleasantries, you’ll find a calming and comforting experience among the vast abundance of creatures who call this farm home. Most are, of course, of the usual farm-based family. Some of the specialties they offer onsite include cow-cuddling opportunities, TreeWalk adventures, and their impressive Birdwalk Aviary.

Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center

Also located in Virginia Beach, you can enjoy this amazing all-in-one endeavor. Originally operating as the Virginia Marine Science Museum, expansions through the years have transformed this optimal aquatic attraction into a truly remarkable, can’t-miss experience for all ages and interests.

Exhibits and attractions here are housed within the two main buildings. Highlights include more than 800,000 gallons of both fresh and saltwater displays, and well over 12,000 unique animals representing 700+ diverse species. These consist of fish and other marine creatures that live in the water, reptiles, amphibians, and even mammals.

Although separate, the buildings are connected by a one-third-mile nature trail running parallel to the resident Owls Creek Salt Marsh. There’s also a contested aerial Adventure Park on the premises, featuring some of the guaranteed best-ever rope-climbing and ziplining around!

Excitement awaits whenever you visit and whatever you choose to pursue on your visit here. One of the many stand-out experiences to consider is Virtual Reality Pods. Enjoy the Good Life and the Water in Erie, Pennsylvania

Erie, Pennsylvania, has long been a maritime center, given its roots in shipbuilding, fishing, travel,
and trade. During the War of 1812, Lake Erie was a hub for naval battles between American
warships, commanded by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, and British ships, including a decisive
American victory in September 1813.

Today, Erie is still a hub for water-based activities enjoyed by individual visitors and families alike.
Visiting the city and the lake of the same name has all the perks of visiting the ocean, but without
having to deal with the saltwater, sharks, and jellyfish.

Use the Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel as your base of operations. This hotel provides delightful
accommodations with Bayfront views on one side and marina and downtown Erie views on the other.
It is conveniently located on the water and within walking distance of many of the amenities
highlighted here.

After checking in, plan to have dinner at the hotel’s main restaurant, Two45 Waterfront Grille. With
its proximity and views of the water, there is no wonder the upscale dining menu focuses on seafood.
But the steaks are really good too. And their Caesar salad, with its chopped romaine hearts and
croutons, may be the best one you will ever have. Don’t pass up having a mixed drink either. The
Tide Shifter is truly one of the most unique cocktails and is a must-try. Its unique mix of ingredients,
contains rum, allspice dram, pineapple, ube, whipped coconut, and dehydrated blueberry, blends
together for a taste of fabulousness.

There are plenty of ways to experience the water in Erie. But the top attraction is Presque Isle State
Park. And the best part is that it is free! Presque Isle is a French term meaning “almost island.” A
National Natural Landmark, this jewel of Lake Erie is a peninsula that helps protect Erie’s natural
harbor. The peninsula, which is attached to the mainland at its neck, is over 7 miles long and two
miles wide near its center.

But your first stop should be to the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, located near the entrance of the
park. This green-designed facility is more than the physical gateway to the isle, it also provides some
amazing insights into the wildlife and ecology of the lake and the bay.

Of course, boating is big here. At the Presque Isle Canoe and Boat Livery, you can rent individual or
tandem kayaks, canoes, paddleboard, row boats, and pontoon boats. You can’t go wrong with the
Presque Isle Lagoon Guided Tour, where you can experience this ecological treasure firsthand.
The tranquil lagoon is a system of waterways connecting Marina Lake to Misery Bay. While you are
paddling, you will likely come across turtles sunning themselves on logs, beaver dams, osprey and
other birds of prey, not to mention the amazing flora and fauna dotting the landscape.

You can easily spend a full day at the state park. Multiple sandy beaches provide swimmers an
opportunity to get into the water. In addition to swimming and boating, fishing, hiking, and biking are
other activities that you can avail yourself. The Perry Monument, erected nearly a century ago,
honors the naval war hero and the victorious War of 1812 battle. But it is not the only historic
structure to see.

Presque Isle State Park is home to two lighthouses, well technically one lighthouse and one “light
structure.” The North Pier Light might appear to be a lighthouse, but it is just a light. This black and white cast iron beauty, located at the far eastern end of the state park and sits on the north pier of the channel to Presque Isle Bay, has guided mariners since 1858. Its unique square-pyramidal design is the only surviving example of this type left in the United States. On the other hand, you can climb the tower at the Presque Isle Lighthouse. The reward is stunning views of the surrounding beaches and Lake Erie. A museum also highlights how the lightkeepers there had lived.

If at any point you get hungry while at the state park, just head back towards the entrance and grab a
bite at Sara’s Diner. This place shouldn’t be missed. The 50’s diner theme has some whimsical
décor, including colorful photo cutouts, funny signs, and playful character statues. Two menu items
you have to get. The first is the foot-long Erie-made Smith’s hot dogs and then you can top that off
with an orange/vanilla soft serve twist ice cream cone.

After your amazing day at the state park, return back to the Sheraton. But the night is far from over.
Grab dinner at the nearby The Cove Bayside Restaurant & Tavern. This eatery on Dobbins
Landing has a nautical theme and offers indoor and outdoor seating with waterfront views of Presque
Isle Bay.

While you are at Dobbins Landing, check out Bicentennial Tower. Built in 1996 to commemorate the
200th anniversary of the founding of the city of Erie, the observation deck at the top offers 360 degree
views of Presque Isle, Lake Erie, and the city. From 138 feet above the ground and water, you will
see an array of boats and ships on the water. If you are lucky, you could possibly even see Canada,
which is just 27 miles away.

Cap the evening with a sunset sail aboard the Lettie G. Howard Schooner which sails right from the
landing. The Lettie G. Howard is a rare surviving example of a fishing schooner that once was in wide
use all over the North Atlantic. Designated a National Historic Landmark, she is truly a symbol of a
bygone era in maritime history. The crew makes the experience even more pleasant. You’ll learn a lot
of new terms as the crew sometimes seems to speak their own language when communicating the
tasks that need done. You might even hear a sea chanty or two. And you can even become part of a
crew by helping them raise one of the sails. The real payoff, though, is the stunning sunset.

On the following day, have brunch at Altered State Distillery. There are some delicious items on the
brunch menu, including the brunch burger with Kentucky bluegrass wagyu, white cheddar, bacon jam,
an egg, lettuce and tomato. For dessert, you can’t go wrong with the southern strawberry shortcake,
which is a buttermilk biscuit, strawberry compote, and vanilla whipped cream. A variety of flavored
mimosas, including orange, pineapple, cherry, raspberry, and others. If several of them sound
appealing and you can’t make a decision, they also offer a Mimosa flight so you can try several.
Considered to be Erie’s first distillery since prohibition, their distilled and blended spirits include gin,
vodka, rum, bourbon and a variety of whiskey. And if you miss brunch, their traditional menu is
inspired by Mexican-American street food and features dishes like carne asada tacos, quesabirria,
and Cubano sandwiches.

To get the full story of maritime history and heritage in the Greater Erie region, visit the Erie Maritime
Museum. You will get to learn more about the War of 1812, an often overlooked conflict in our
nation’s history that not many Americans are familiar with. There’s more to discover than just the
military accounts however. You’ll explore various industries of the Great Lakes, the people of the
area, and so much more.

In case you didn’t get enough lighthouses while at Presque Isle State Park, The Erie Land
Lighthouse is on the mainland. Built in 1818, it was the first commissioned lighthouse on the Great
Lakes in the United States. The light was originally positioned 200 feet to the west on a cliff
overlooking the entrance to Presque Isle Bay. The current sandstone tower was constructed in 1866-
67 and operated until 1899. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Erie Land
Lighthouse stands 49 feet tall. On weekends during the season, you can also climb to the top of it.

Before heading back home, The Sloppy Duck Saloon/JR’s on the Bay: provides you one more
chance to enjoy waterfront dining. As the saying goes, when in Rome do as the Romans do. Since
you are on Lake Erie, you have to eat some seafood that hails from the area. On their menu, you can
get a Lake Erie perch sandwich or a walleye sandwich. Other options include coconut shrimp, artisan
flatbread pizzas, and the Jack Daniels chicken sandwich is a good recommendation. Request a table
on their deck that overlooks one of the many local boat marinas and offers gorgeous sunset views.
On your way in or out, stop to check out the resident ducks and turtles that call the property home.

SWEET Attractions to Explore Throughout the Mid-Atlantic

It cannot be denied that some of the sweetest day trip destinations center around classic culinary confections. Popular examples include candy tastings, ice cream trails, and other regional callouts renowned for dishing up the works in time-tested treats. For most people living in the Mid-Atlantic region, visits to Hershey, Pennsylvania, particularly outings to Hersheypark and Chocolate World, take the cake (or in this case, candy bar) as the first thought when considering convenient classic candy-themed excursions close to home. But there are so many other novelties to explore—hidden gems in nearby locales and neighboring states. Here are four contested candy attractions to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum & Candy Emporium

You may want to consider this sweet detour in Adams County, Pennsylvania. Despite its proximity to Gettysburg, Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum & Candy Emporium remains one of the area’s best-kept secrets. The scene here is one to universally enthrall visitors of all ages, from the attention-snagging presentation of larger-than-life elephants to the sweet smells of homemade fudge and other nostalgic candy classics permeating the air.

When they first opened in 1975, at their former location along Route 30 (just three miles away from their current site), they were known originally as “Mister Ed’s: The Territory’s Most Unusual General Store.” Nothing more or less than a roadside stop, they were primarily known for vending in snacks, hoagies, novelty merchandise (including Native American jewelry), coal gifts, and antiques. But it was their candy offerings that would go on to become their ultimate claim to fame, along with those literal elephants in the room! Of course, most of these came later once they relocated to their new site. Now the collection comprises somewhere in the ballpark of 12,000 or so elephants, varying in shapes, sizes, themes, and media. From figurines to four life-sized elephants, and everything else in between! The museum has even gained national and international recognition for its famous elephant collection.

While the elephants are responsible for much of Mister Ed’s renown, the delectable in-house confectionery finds here garner the most praise. That’s because there are plenty of novelties to choose from. The lineup includes nearly 200 varieties of homemade fudge, pecan pralines, turtles, roasted nuts (including jumbo peanuts and house-made cinnamon-glazed nuts), freshly made peanut butter, and classic candies of many kinds. These range from today’s hottest hits to hard-to-find exclusives, along with those nostalgic throwbacks. You’ll find over a thousand different candy varieties, including more than 400 candy bars, and even one of the largest displays of PEZ on the East Coast. Sarris Candies

Another Pennsylvania confectionery callout can be found conveniently located in Cannonsburg (just a little southwest of Pittsburgh). But coming here isn’t just about the literal candies. The sight that awaits is quite literally eye candy as well.

That’s just as it should be, given how Sarris Candies has been hard at work in the business of candy crafting for 65 years now. Forever family-owned and operated (now in its fourth generation), it all started with Frank Sarris, a forklift driver by trade who spent many years moonlighting as an experimental chocolatier, perfecting his candy-making endeavors. It wasn’t long before his hobby took the forefront in his ambitions, and a new dream unfolded—that of full-time candy and confection-making.

The anchoring store location draws in visitors from all over the country. They come for the candy, of course, but also to marvel at the presentation of amazing chocolate sculptures decking out the edible décor here, including their 1,500-pound chocolate castle made entirely by hand! There’s also the attached ice cream parlor presenting the finest frozen features and an all-around enticing experience.

All the decadent delights here are made on location within their onsite factory. The wide range of tasty treats spans every imaginable option, from fine chocolates to penny candy, and everything else.

True Treats Candy

True Treats is a true treasure for historians and candy connoisseurs alike. Based in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, this candy destination is admittedly more museum than conventional candy shop. It is the only research-based candy store in the nation focused on the storied origins of classic sweet treats. To sum up the words of food historian Susan Benjamin, “it is a museum that sells its confectionery displays.”

Benjamin, who founded True Treats, showcases countless classic candies and more than 500 historic teas—all carefully researched and authenticated by her. Some of the antiquated amazements here date back to ancient times. One example of a long-ago tasty vice you can try in its unbridled and original format is the hickory bark enjoyed and introduced by the Iroquois. Enjoy Healing Waters and a Summer Camp Feel at Capon Springs and Farms

This day in age it seems nearly impossible to truly escape from the real world. But if you yearn for an opportunity to do just that, there is a place that beckons you to Hampshire County, West Virginia. The place is called Capon Springs and Farms and it is like a summer camp for adults (yes, families are welcome as well). We are talking an old fashioned summer camp, the kind you attended when you were a kid.

Given its namesake, one of the reasons people have been drawn to this location for centuries is because of the natural spring water that comes from the ground. The word Capon is believed to be of Shawnee origin meaning medicine waters or healing waters. The waters have always been considered to have healing properties. For example, the water helps eliminate acid, improve digestion, and reduce inflammation.

Listed on national Register of Historic Places, Capon Springs has quite a history. Daniel Webster came to dedicate the property and President Franklin Pierce also visited here. During the golden era of springs and baths, from 1870-1910, it was a happening place. Their water was designated as the official water of Congress, was used by the U.S. Olympic Team in 1924 and 1928, and has been delivered all over the world. And yes, you as well as the general public, are welcome to take some of it home.

From May to early November, guests can stay at one of 14 unique cottages at Capon Springs and Farms. During your visit, you can play a round of golf on the nine-hole course or their par three course. If you don’t have a set of clubs, you might be able to use one of the loaner sets available. Want to try something new? Then head up to the course and play fling golf instead. But they will have to explain the game to you.

Also on property are tennis courts as well as designated areas to play volleyball, ping pong, shuffleboard, cornhole, and jumbo lawn games. Fishing gear can also be borrowed. They also have indoor games, puzzles, and cards are available, as well as a library for reading and relaxing. All these activities make you feel like you are attending a summer camp. In fact, you can even participate in a flag raising or flag lowering ceremony at the beginning and end of each day, enjoy a campfire, or just stroll the grounds as music plays throughout the property. Be sure to check the activity board for daily announcements and other special events.

Of course, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the water. Swim in the spring-fed 65 degree pool, which offers a refreshing activity. Or book a slot at Hygeia Bath House and Spa, where you can soak in one of their three Roman Style baths. Each one is filled with 500 gallons of pure Capon Springs Water heated to 102 degrees. You also have an option to add aromatherapy mineral salts during your visit. Also on site is a swimspa that provides you with a jetted workout area for swimming, exercising, and floating. Traditional spa services are also available, including reflexology and various types of massages.

Porching is a thing here, providing visitors the chance to socialize with their neighbors and new friends. Adult beverages can be consumed on your porch or in your room, but nowhere else on property. There are no phones, televisions, or internet access in guest rooms, but if you need access to any of them they can be found on the property. It is truly an escape from the modern world. Given its remote location, cellphone reception is also limited.

Meals are served family-style and buffet-style with a set weekly menu and each meal is served at a specific time each day in their dining hall, although some meals are served at the Sunset Lodge up the hill.
