Do you wanna rock? If so, here’s your chance. Toby’s Dinner Theatre in Columbia, Maryland is staging a production of “Rock of Ages.” This show is tailored for all Gen Xers, or anyone who was a fan of hair bands and good, old-fashion rock n’ roll from the 1980’s.
The show, set in Hollywood in the 1980’s, not only has a love story mingled in within the plot but also includes a feel-good story of saving a local musical establishment from demolition by greedy developers. Unlike some musicals, anyone that loved the rock anthems of that decade will literally know every song and likely all the lyrics. This jukebox musical features one recognizable rock song after another that will leave you wanting for more.

As with most shows at Toby’s, the cast is fantastic. This is another strong ensemble, bringing a good mix of regulars and new cast members together. One of the newcomers is Justin Colombo, who plays the role of Lonny and takes the audience on the wild ride essentially as the show’s narrator. There are many times throughout the show that you will find yourself laughing, and Colombo’s part is one of the big reasons why. Just know that there are some adult situations and language throughout.
The two leads, Noah Mutterperl and Rachel Cahoon, have the pipes required to belt out these ballads. Mutterperl plays Drew, a wannabe rock star trying to chase his dreams. Cahoon plays Sherrie, a “small town girl” who moves to California also hoping to follow her ambition of being an actress. As they pursue their own goals, they also struggle with their potential relationship. The songs both actors sing are not easy, but they both deliver with their strong voices. Another powerhouse voice comes from Kadejah One, a New Orleans native who plays the role of Justice. She can sing! And the live band truly rocks it as well.

If the 80’s music is not enough for you to come out to a performance, the costumes could be another. For anyone nostalgic for 1980’s attire you will enjoy seeing the cast decked out in the bold and bright clothes, denim jackets, bandanas, and big hair.
When it comes to dinner theater, you not only get to see a show but you also get a full buffet meal for one price. Their food is pretty good, which includes a salad bar, full hot buffet line, carving station, complimentary basic drinks (although a full cash bar is available), and choice of dessert. Cast members come in early to set up, then wait tables, perform in the show, and settle checks during intermission.
Rock of Ages played on Broadway for over five years and a movie, starring Tom Cruise, was also made. But now you can see the production right here in the DMV. It’s the final countdown though, as the show closes March 15th. So go to TobysDinnerTheatre.com to purchase your tickets. You’ll have nothin’ but a good time!
