It’s widely known that Ocean City, Maryland, is one of the most popular beachgoing destinations for summer vacations. But for more than three decades, the town has also drawn visitors throughout the winter holiday season thanks to the annual Winterfest of Lights event.
True, there is no shortage of stellar seasonal celebrations featuring lighted displays and whatnot across the region. But Ocean City’s Winterfest of Lights remains one of the most remarkable holiday experiences worth a visit each year.
Winterfest kicks off just before Thanksgiving and preparations get under way in Northside Park well before then. Opening night festivities officially commence with the traditional lighting of a 50-foot tree, with free admission to all. But truth be told, general admission is always low, considering all that you get at Winterfest. It’s just $6 for ages 12 and older and is free for attendees 11 and younger.
Nearly 60 acres of stunning themed light displays comprise the vast outdoor setup. Many are synchronized with jovial Christmas music you know and love, provided by Radio Ocean City. Displays are placed all around the park’s grounds, some are situated directly on the water.
In the past, Winterfest was presented as a ride-through feature, operating via tram. This was discontinued years ago in favor of a reimagined walkthrough experience. Last year marked the return of the tram, with embarking and disembarking points available for a combined ride-and-walk option. But, most folks preferred the go-at- your-own-pace ease of walking, so the tram will not be making a reappearance this Season.
This year they’re offering more attractions than ever before, with enhanced displays and outdoor features. Some of the delightful highlights to look forward to include interactive outdoor games, getting to pose at various designated selfie spots, a festive bonfire, and even surrey rentals on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Pets are welcome at Winterfest on Wednesdays.
While most of the standout features of Winterfest are, of course, the outdoor lighted displays, do take note of the Winterfest Pavilion, which allows you to come out of the cold and warm up with some merry indoor cheer. Indulge in a steamy cup of hot chocolate, strike a pose with Santa and Mrs. Claus, get involved with some hands-on family-festive crafting activities. Then be sure to check out all the souvenirs and mementos in the onsite gift shop.
There’s just so much to see, do, and take in during Winterfest of Lights. But don’t take my word for it; head to Ocean City yourself to see your favorite beachgoing destination undergo a magical transformation into a winter wonderland spectacle like no other. The 2024 installment of Ocean City’s Winterfest of Lights will run Nov. 21 through Dec. 31. Hours of operation are 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., Wednesdays through Sundays, through Dec. 22. It will be open every night Dec. 23-31.
