Did you know that recreational dog sledding is actually a thing in Maryland? What’s even more surprising is discovering that such events occur right in the heart of Baltimore County rather than out west in the state’s more mountainous regions.

Also known as “mushing,” dog sled racing has long been associated with the far north and colder climates worldwide. Within the United States, most people erroneously assume that Alaska is the only state to lay claim to such endeavors. But that is certainly not the case. Maryland isn’t even the only state in the continental U.S. to offer this unique activity. Still, it’s admittedly rare to find dog sledding excursions in the Mid-Atlantic, and there’s just one operation specializing in them in all of Maryland. Enter Maryland Dog Sled Adventures, LLC.
Maryland Dog Sled Adventures, LLC is a family-owned business that’s been around since 2008. Founded with a mission to educate and enlighten people about the art of mushing, they remain passionate about providing an array of opportunities to learn about and experience the joy of mushing firsthand. They actively cater to all ages, interests, and levels of expertise. Whether you’re a complete novice unfamiliar with the sport or one of the rare enthusiasts with some prior knowledge and experience, their programs can be custom-tailored for participants as young as five.

Their most popular offering is leading individuals or groups on dog-sled excursions along the Torrey C. Brown Trail (Northern Central Railroad Trail) in Gunpowder Falls State Park. Even so, there’s great variation in their available selections, depending on the specific outing and duration you choose. Weight limits and restrictions, as well as mandatory dress codes, safety gear requirements, and other protocols, must also be considered.
Their versatile program offerings come in many different formats. Among their most popular options are their “Yappy Hour” rides.

In addition to the thrill of an active outing, Maryland Dog Sled Adventures, LLC also provides non-ride educational classroom events and virtual programs. They offer onsite, custom-tailored birthday party packages and patch-earning opportunities for scouting groups.
Despite the snowy connotations we often associate with dog sledding, mushing can still be pursued when the ground is clear and the terrain is dry. The skilled Siberian Huskies that make up the Maryland Dog Sled Adventures team are prepared to take you through all weather conditions. These dogs are experts in their line of work, so you can rest assured that you’re always in good paws!

Maryland Dog Sled Adventures, LLC tours run from October to March. Pricing varies depending on which unique experience you wish to embark on, as the offerings are highly versatile.
Because of the novelty and high demand for these excursions, bookings begin as early as July for the upcoming season. You can email co-founder Catherine Benson directly to make arrangements well in advance or ask any other questions. Visit www.marylanddogsledding.com to learn more.
