Honoring Heroes: Wreaths Across America at Arlington National Cemetery

by Susan O'Connor

Every December, Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia transforms into a beautiful tribute to our nation’s fallen heroes. This year, on Saturday, December 14, 2024, Wreaths Across America offers an opportunity to honor those who served by placing evergreen wreaths with bright red bows on their graves.

The event begins with a heartfelt ceremony at 8:00 AM, followed by volunteers laying wreaths across the cemetery. It’s a personal moment to say the name of a veteran aloud and honor their legacy. Families, friends, and solo participants are welcome to join—just sign up on the Wreaths Across America website.

Arlington National Cemetery, located at 1 Memorial Avenue, Arlington, VA 22211, is especially poignant during the holidays. The sight of wreaths against white headstones is unforgettable. If you’re planning to attend, consider taking public transportation, as parking is limited. The Metro stops right at the gates, and additional parking details are available online.

Even if you can’t attend, the wreaths remain in place for several weeks, allowing time to visit and reflect during the holiday season. If you would still like to contribute your time, consider volunteering to help remove wreaths during the annual “Wreaths Out” event on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025. Wreaths Across America is more than an event; it’s a movement to ensure no hero is forgotten.

For more details or to sponsor a wreath, visit the official Wreaths Across America website. Let’s make this season one of gratitude and remembrance.
